It seems that Rose Brokenshire‘s music is tough to pin to down just one style, but it could probably be summed up as some variant of electronic folk music. We decided to check out the Toronto based singer songwriter’s recent track “Maybe We’re Just Tired” from the EP entitled “In a Spell - EP”.

The track begins with a familiar vinyl popping and cracking sound with some light synth pads, which then abruptly cuts to a bright and shiny arpeggiated electric piano pattern. Rose enters with almost a whisper singing sweetly about what seems to the breakdown of a relationship in some capacity. Soon after, a new layer of keys enters with a wash of phaser or chorus for some impactful chord stabs.

About half of the way through the track, a very off kilter but still completely groovy drum pattern comes in that brings on a sense of being someplace ethereal and altered. A beautifully shiny single note keyboard melody steps in while Rose sings some long and luscious stacked harmonies. Eventually drums drop out and we are left with only the voice and keys, but this is ultimately a brief distraction as the vinyl pops are soon heard once more before the track fades.

Overall I think this track is cleverly arranged and written with a fine ear for mood. The song definitely evokes otherworldly feelings and can provide some audible comfort for those who enjoy some of the more mysterious recordings on the market. As I have thoroughly enjoyed this record, I must give it the grade of “Spin It Again”. I’d encourage any music fan with good taste to check out this and other works from Rose Brokenshire. Until next time.
