MIDA - Back In London

MIDA is a new band with a new plan. Their new single titled “Back In London“ awaits.

“Back In London” begins as any journey should. A garden variety safety seminar from a flight attendant precedes a sudden landing. Altogether listeners are transported to the streets of London. The track feels like a clever riff on the basic idea presented via The Beatles “Back In The USSR” mixed with the basic tenants of the classic British rock sound.

The chord structure is basic but sweet, guitar chords are carved out with a psychedelic buzzsaw, and some incredibly sweet sounding harmonies round out the sound. A basic pop structure is used with enough changes to keep things interesting, and all performances are well done. Lyrically, British tropes such as “the Duke” are used in good fun, and add to the English vibe of the track.

Despite being a relatively simple song, the spirit of rock n roll is well in place on this track. Thus, I must assign “Back In London” a score of “Spin It Again”. Join the band for some discussion

How did this group get it’s start?

MIDA took its first steps in early 2019 when two old friends, Davide Dal Maso and Milo Vason, decide to try to keep their passion for music and songwriting alive despite the very little free time available. Given the difficulties in meeting regularly to form a real band, we decided to try to work remotely by recording each one in our own small home studio and then putting together the ideas. In short, "homemade" music!

Thanks to this method and a lot of determination, in July 2019 the first two singles saw the light, "Eridanos' Blues" (dedicated to our river Po and the myth of Phaeton and which sees the participation of our friend Fabio Rossin at the harmonica) and "Evil Bees" (a darker song about the controversial relationship between good and evil, man and nature). From the third single, "Airily Aging" (song that talks about the transition from carefree adolescence to the concreteness of adult life), released in March 2020, Andrea Nardin (solo voice) joins the group and the duo thus becomes a trio.

On our musical background we can say that we all have our roots in the 90s-2000s, the era of grunge-metal. In those years all three of us played in local bands but then for several years we were forced to move away from music. With the MIDA project we were finally able to resume our passion, and it is therefore very important for us: it represents our resilience, our strong will to make music despite the difficulties.

"Back in London" is our fourth single, released in October 2020. Milo got the inspiration for the song during a trip to London in 2019. It is a virtual journey to rediscover the places and episodes that, in that city, have marked the history of rock. All this has taken on further significance due to the pandemic, which has made travel much more difficult and therefore London much further away.

The creative process for this song began with a chord progression and a textual idea from Milo. Then all three of us contributed with further ideas to give an overall shape to the song, defining the succession of verses and choruses, devising melodies and lyrics. Once the composition was given a definitive form, each of us moved on to record his own part in his home studio: Davide programmed the drums and recorded bass, rhythm guitars and vocals; Milo has recorded rhythm guitars and solos; Andrea recorded his vocal part. Having reached the final stages of the recording, we wanted to add more color to the song by also involving our friend Nicoletta Guidetti for the backing vocals. A curiosity: the parts of Nicoletta were "recorded at home" by Davide who brought a small recording set-up in Nicoletta's living room. The final mixing of the song was then carried out by Davide while Simone Cerchiaro, from the Radice Sonora studio, took care of the last step, the mastering.

What comes next for the group?

We are already working on the composition of a new song but the details are still top secret. We can only say that it will be a more lively and heavier piece than the previous ones and that there will be an unprecedented collaboration with other friends...
