Whisper Dish is a new project from Auckland, New Zealand based Tim McNaughton. The group has a new EP coming out early next year, and we got a closer look at one of the project’s singles.
“Painted” ticks all of the classic garage rock boxes. The track sounds convincingly 60’s, down to small musical inflictions of the instrumentalists. The simplicity of a two chord pattern doesn’t take away from music like this.
The vocals features a nice millisecond delay and slap back reverb combo, which helps to give the laid back Pavement style vocals a bit more body. The guitars use a classic spring reverb sound, perfectly befitting of the track’s overall.
The chorus features a vocal comprised of a number of harmonized “oooooh”s” singing a three note melody over similar chords. At this point the jangle of the acoustic guitar becomes more apparent, and well played and crunchy blues lick bring the song to a clean halt.
While the track is nothing that fans of garage rock haven’t heard before, I think that the reading is genuine enough that fans of the genre will find a lot to like here. “Painted” is a valiant garage rock effort, and thus earns a grade of “Deeeeecent”. Until next time.
